The Shedd Aquarium at 1200 South Lake Shore Drive is near the Metra, South Shore and CTA rail lines. Open since 1930, animals at the aquarium include penguins, dolphins, sea otters, sea lions, sharks and beluga whales.
Things to Know
- Walking time is about 16 minutes from CTA and 9 minutes from Metra/South Shore line
- The aquarium is next to the Lakefront Trail (as well as The Field Museum and Adler Planetarium) — great for a bike commute
- Between May and September, Shoreline water taxis travel between Shedd Aquarium and Navy Pier, which is an easy way to travel between these attractions

Tip: On weekends, Metra offers a weekend pass for unlimited rides. You can get on an Electric District train at the Millennium Station next to Millennium Park or at the Van Buren Street Station next to the Art Institute of Chicago if you are sightseeing in the area. The Electric District train also travels to the Museum of Science and Industry in Hyde Park.
