Chicago’s Lakefront Trail is an 18-mile biking and walking path along Lake Michigan. Divvy bikes are available near the trail and around rail stations for short-term rentals.

Things to Know

  • The Lakefront Trail connects many Chicago attractions and beaches that otherwise are a 15-minute walk or more from a rail station, including the Lincoln Park Zoo, Navy Pier, Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium.
  • Unless you have a membership, Divvy bike rentals use a 24-hour pass system, but you can’t have the bike checked out more than 30 minutes at a time. However, you can dock a bike, then check it out again immediately to continue riding.

Where to Get On the Trail

Here are some of the recommended places near CTA to rent a bike and get on the trail:

Bryn Mawr
Head to the north side of Chicago for the start of the trail near the Bryn Mawr CTA Station on the red line. Walk 9 minutes down Bryn Mawr to rent bikes near the trail or walk two minutes to the bike docks near the station (head toward the Dunkin’ Donuts and cross the street at the first stoplight then turn right). Note that Bryn Mawr Avenue dead ends at the Lakefront Trail.

From this location, you can reach the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum within 30 minutes, but you’ll need to dock your bike in front of the museum or in Lincoln Park and check it out again in order to continue south toward downtown Chicago.

Divvy bikes are across the street from the Wilson CTA Station on the red and purple line. A short ride down Wilson Avenue is the trail and Montrose Beach if you want to dock your bike and relax at the beach before continuing your excursion. Head south toward the Chicago skyline to reach Belmont Harbor and Diversey Harbor (great views if you enjoy boats or sailing).

Wilson Station Divvy bikes

If you don’t want to travel so far north of downtown Chicago, the Belmont CTA Station is near several Divvy bike docks and the Belmont Harbor. From there, bike about 15 minutes to the Lincoln Park Zoo, Chicago History Museum and the North Avenue Beach or ride straight to Navy Pier in about 26 minutes.
